Los Mariachis

If you have no idea what the deal is, start HERE

So, with an extra $5 in my pocket I was feeling a little rich. While sushi may be my #1 ride or die, Mexican food takes a pretty close second. There's nothing better than fresh pico or guacamole, 3 to 8 tacos and a little too much tequila. So when I had the itch to order in, and with a credit on my Skip account, I went straight for this place:

Los Mariachis (Mexican Cuisine)
7400 Macleod Trail SE
Delivery Fee: $3.99 Price: $$$**

Los Mariachis is a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant that's family owned and operated. I've eaten in person there a few times, and I have never been disappointed. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the food is amazing, and they're extremely accommodating to people with allergies, suggesting alternatives and making them sans certain ingredients (ie. dairy)

Pollo en Molé (Chicken in mole sauce, side of seasoned rice and beans) $18.00

Gimme dat sauce
I LOVE MOLÉ SAUCE. A symphonic combination of chilies, chocolate, peanuts and spices, I could literally eat this sauce forever and ever. But that would be wildly irresponsible and I would get scurvy. But this sauce is my absolute favourite, and despite the chicken being a little tough, the molé was exquisite. The chocolate balances and softens the chilies, and the light hint of peanuts (sorry nut allergists) makes it less of a spicy chocolate sauce and brings it into the savoury realm. The sides were your standard rice and beans, but again, THAT SAUCE. It makes even beans taste amazing.

Now. I may have totally given over to my impulses for dessert, but it was 100% worth it.

Trés Leches Cake (3 milk cake) $5.50

Look at this beauty
Yes, this is exactly what it says on the tin. A cake soaked in 3 different kinds of milk. "But Jayme", you may ask, "Are you not lactose intolerant?". To which I answer, yes, but I am also impulsive with little respect for your arbitrary labels!

Also, this cake is amazing.

A vanilla sponge cake soaked in evaporated and condensed milk, with heavy cream. Topped with whipped cream. A dairy disaster, you might call it. But it's amazing. The cake isn't soggy, but light and airy, and every bite is packed with a refreshing milky taste. Worth the pain and suffering? Absolutely.

Another one
Honestly, the food here is amazing, but I would recommend going to eat there in person. The atmosphere and the staff make for an excellent dining experience. Snarfing your meal alone on the couch watching Netflix doesn't give quite the same satisfaction to this meal. It was, however, still really good. A 7/10! So go and visit Los Mariachis! Don't blink or you'll miss it!

Happy Eating!

MARKET Restaurant

If you're a bit lost, start  HERE I'm back! This summer has been a hurricane of fun, and with that hurricane blew in some AMAZING food. One of my favourite discoveries of the summer has been MARKET Restaurant! MARKET Restaurant 17th Ave SW Calgary, Alberta $$$** Even thought it's situated right on the busy 17th Ave thoroughfare, MARKET feels like a hidden gem. It's focus on local, sustainable food and in-house preparation makes it one of the most wholesome dining experiences I've had yet. They make their own cheese, cure their own meats, and harvest from their own internal garden to craft some incredible dishes.  The neat thing is that none of this is apparent unless you go looking for it. From their social media presence to their waitstaff (who are amazing), the focus seems to be on the food itself, with the story and philosophy of it's sustainable initiatives only coming in on the official website for the restaurant.  BUT ANYWAYS The...

Hey There!

Welcome to Tall, Blonde, and Hungry. Lets get to know each other. I'm Jayme. I'm tall, blonde, and very hungry. I moved to Calgary in August of 2016, and I relished being able to eat at so many amazing places. I have a great joy for good food, and being in Calgary has fed that joy (and hunger) tenfold. As a lactose intolerant, hungry hungry hippo, I believe that food is one of the great joys in life. The flavours, the textures, the simple joy from a good meal is one of the best feelings in the world. I want nothing more than to share that feeling with as many people as possible, be that friends, family or you. Yes you! So join me while I eat my way through YYC, one dairy free bite at a time. Happy eating! Jayme

Portland Part I

If you're a bit lost, start  HERE Over the summer, I was supposed to do a lot of things. I was supposed to climb a mountain (yeah right), work on my writing (ditto), and go to a music festival. The music festival plan went 10 types of sideways, so instead I went to Portland for 4 days to eat my way through America's hipster capital. LET ME TELL YOU I did not want to come home. I may have cried a little upon liftoff. But before all the sadness and goodbyes, I managed to enjoy the city throughly. Rolling in on a balmy August Wednesday, the city welcomed me with open arms. The first thing I noticed about downtown Portland was that the transit system was way better than back home. (thanks Calgary) The second thing I noticed was the food carts.  In a handful of strategic spots downtown, Portland has given an entire city block over to various food carts. I'm talking tacos, shawarma, donair, kebobs, fried chicken, ramen, paleo BBQ, sushi, Cajun cuisine, donuts...
