Portland Part II

For Part One, CLICK ME

Last week on TBH, my bro Thomas and I were in the throes of a carb nap. Beset by poor planning and wandering stomachs, we made a solemn vow to Plan Ahead.

So we Googled "best Portland brunch" and settled on No Bones Beach Club, a vegan joint with the promise of delightful treats and drinks with tiny paper umbrellas.

What we got was so, so much better. But first-

No Bones is located in the scenic and historical Mississippi district in Portland, a charming strip lined with shops and coffee joints that's perfect for moseying by on a sunny day. It serves up vegan, locally and ethically sourced tiki influenced treats ranging from brunch to lunch all the way to dinner and drinks. They also donate a portion of the proceeds to a local animal rescue every month!

BUT BACK TO THE FOOD
This is what dreams are made of
Holy. Guacamole.

The crab cake benedict was amazing. The vegan hollandaise was creamy and spiced lightly with mustard, and the hashbrown was perfectly crispy. I honestly have never been partial to tofu, but this dish could really turn me around on that.

This is what daydreams are made of
My travel bud got the Huevos, which was the perfect savoury complement to my own breakfast. I know this because I insisted that we switch dishes halfway through, so I could try that pile of tasty beans.

But oh, dear readers, that was not even the best thing to happen to us at the No Bones Beach Club.
Nay, the topper to our beautiful brunch was our introduction to Tiny Drake.

No Bones has a cocktail on menu dubbed "The Drake Drink", which comes with the above pictured tiny picture of Canadian rap/R&B sensation, Aubrey "Drake" Graham.

I immediately bonded with the skewered portrait and dubbed it Tiny Drake, and Tiny Drake and I were gonna take Portland by storm.

From coffee....

...to the farmers market...

..to our daily brewery stop at Stormbreaker Brewing...

...even on our afternoon ice cream stop. Tiny Drake and I were inseparable.

We even went to the immaculate Luc Lac for a sampling of their fresh, vegan friendly Vietnamese cuisine.
No regrets

Of course, no one goes to Portland without visiting a certain infamous doughnut shop....

This is what ACTUAL dreams are made of. I have a lot of dreams

That's right babies. Tiny Drake and I paid a visit to Voodoo Doughnut

Eenie, meenie, minie, MINE
Don't listen to the haters, this place is THE BEST. I was in and out in 10 minutes, with a selection of handmade and lovingly glazed bits of yeast to feast on (also a few cake doughnuts).
They also have an avenue straight to my weird heart. You see that dead guy doughnut? It's filled with raspberry jelly! So it looks like he's bleeding when you eat him. Delightful!

Tiny Drake loves those doughnuts
Tiny Drake and myself highly endorse these 'nuts. In fact, I went back the next day for more, and tried to bring some home the day after that.

But at the end of the day, TD was tuckered out.

It's hard to be a star
Sweet dreams, TD. Sweet dreams.

Find the entirety of the Tiny Drake saga on my Instagram, @tallblondehungryyyc, and as always, Happy Eating!

MARKET Restaurant

If you're a bit lost, start  HERE I'm back! This summer has been a hurricane of fun, and with that hurricane blew in some AMAZING food. One of my favourite discoveries of the summer has been MARKET Restaurant! MARKET Restaurant 17th Ave SW Calgary, Alberta $$$** Even thought it's situated right on the busy 17th Ave thoroughfare, MARKET feels like a hidden gem. It's focus on local, sustainable food and in-house preparation makes it one of the most wholesome dining experiences I've had yet. They make their own cheese, cure their own meats, and harvest from their own internal garden to craft some incredible dishes.  The neat thing is that none of this is apparent unless you go looking for it. From their social media presence to their waitstaff (who are amazing), the focus seems to be on the food itself, with the story and philosophy of it's sustainable initiatives only coming in on the official website for the restaurant.  BUT ANYWAYS The...

Hey There!

Welcome to Tall, Blonde, and Hungry. Lets get to know each other. I'm Jayme. I'm tall, blonde, and very hungry. I moved to Calgary in August of 2016, and I relished being able to eat at so many amazing places. I have a great joy for good food, and being in Calgary has fed that joy (and hunger) tenfold. As a lactose intolerant, hungry hungry hippo, I believe that food is one of the great joys in life. The flavours, the textures, the simple joy from a good meal is one of the best feelings in the world. I want nothing more than to share that feeling with as many people as possible, be that friends, family or you. Yes you! So join me while I eat my way through YYC, one dairy free bite at a time. Happy eating! Jayme

Portland Part I

If you're a bit lost, start  HERE Over the summer, I was supposed to do a lot of things. I was supposed to climb a mountain (yeah right), work on my writing (ditto), and go to a music festival. The music festival plan went 10 types of sideways, so instead I went to Portland for 4 days to eat my way through America's hipster capital. LET ME TELL YOU I did not want to come home. I may have cried a little upon liftoff. But before all the sadness and goodbyes, I managed to enjoy the city throughly. Rolling in on a balmy August Wednesday, the city welcomed me with open arms. The first thing I noticed about downtown Portland was that the transit system was way better than back home. (thanks Calgary) The second thing I noticed was the food carts.  In a handful of strategic spots downtown, Portland has given an entire city block over to various food carts. I'm talking tacos, shawarma, donair, kebobs, fried chicken, ramen, paleo BBQ, sushi, Cajun cuisine, donuts...
