Chachi's (Sundance)

If you have no idea what the deal is, start HERE

Chachi's- Sandwiches, Salads, Sides
Sundance 6103 15 Sunpark Plaza SE
Delivery Fee: $5.49 Price: $4-$11

One of my favourite places to order from is Chachi's. Chachi's is a sandwich joint that makes it's food with local ingredients and producers, like Benny's Bakery and Valbella Gourmet Foods out of Canmore. They currently have 10 locations throughout the city, as well as a store in Edmonton, and a few in B.C. The only location currently on Skip (to my knowledge) is the Sundance location, which accounts for it's significant delivery charge to both my work and home.

Banh Mi-beef brisket in an asian marinade, garlic aioli, pickled carrots, cilantro and slices of jalapeno.
$11.00
I usually order the Banh Mi sandwich, and haven't really had the motivation to change it up from this succulent little beast. The buns they use are always a little crispy, but soft on the inside, and they generally have a powdery coating on them (possibly flour) but it hasn't ever lessened my enjoyment of this sandwich. The brisket has an incredible flavour, kind of umami but with a anise undertone to it, and it's very tender. The garlic aioli really adds to that flavour, and the pickled carrots cut through all the spice with a little vineagery bite. The jalapeno and cilantro come in with just enough flavour to remind you "Hey we're here!" but it's never overwhelming. Every time I eat this sandwich, it's always SO GOOD.

Side bar: Yes, I know cilantro poisons the entire meal for some people, but Chachi's is really good about special orders, so you can always order it without. I love cilantro though :)

They also have a really good selection of specialty sodas from Fentimans and Americana soda. I highly recommend the Fentimans Cherry Tree Cola, because I LOVE cherry cola anything. It tastes like those little silver Coke balls you get from old candy stores!
Ordering from the SE is a challenge, and unfortunately Chachi's always takes at least 45 minute to get to you. They rarely confirm your order before a half hour has passed, and that's my #1 gripe with this place. But the food is incredible, and one of these days I'll branch out from my favourite and try some more!

Overall, Chachi's is a great place, and if you ever get the chance to visit them in person at one of their many locations, I'd absolutely do it. Their food is delicious, fresh and mostly locally sourced, and their salads and kettle cooked chips make for great sides if you feel like it. But their sandwiches are really center stage, and for good reason. I'd order from them more, but due to distance and the continual time performance, not to mention that fat delivery fee, I've put Chachi's firmly into the Treat Yo' Self category of restaurants, at a 7/10.

MARKET Restaurant

If you're a bit lost, start  HERE I'm back! This summer has been a hurricane of fun, and with that hurricane blew in some AMAZING food. One of my favourite discoveries of the summer has been MARKET Restaurant! MARKET Restaurant 17th Ave SW Calgary, Alberta $$$** Even thought it's situated right on the busy 17th Ave thoroughfare, MARKET feels like a hidden gem. It's focus on local, sustainable food and in-house preparation makes it one of the most wholesome dining experiences I've had yet. They make their own cheese, cure their own meats, and harvest from their own internal garden to craft some incredible dishes.  The neat thing is that none of this is apparent unless you go looking for it. From their social media presence to their waitstaff (who are amazing), the focus seems to be on the food itself, with the story and philosophy of it's sustainable initiatives only coming in on the official website for the restaurant.  BUT ANYWAYS The...

Hey There!

Welcome to Tall, Blonde, and Hungry. Lets get to know each other. I'm Jayme. I'm tall, blonde, and very hungry. I moved to Calgary in August of 2016, and I relished being able to eat at so many amazing places. I have a great joy for good food, and being in Calgary has fed that joy (and hunger) tenfold. As a lactose intolerant, hungry hungry hippo, I believe that food is one of the great joys in life. The flavours, the textures, the simple joy from a good meal is one of the best feelings in the world. I want nothing more than to share that feeling with as many people as possible, be that friends, family or you. Yes you! So join me while I eat my way through YYC, one dairy free bite at a time. Happy eating! Jayme

Portland Part I

If you're a bit lost, start  HERE Over the summer, I was supposed to do a lot of things. I was supposed to climb a mountain (yeah right), work on my writing (ditto), and go to a music festival. The music festival plan went 10 types of sideways, so instead I went to Portland for 4 days to eat my way through America's hipster capital. LET ME TELL YOU I did not want to come home. I may have cried a little upon liftoff. But before all the sadness and goodbyes, I managed to enjoy the city throughly. Rolling in on a balmy August Wednesday, the city welcomed me with open arms. The first thing I noticed about downtown Portland was that the transit system was way better than back home. (thanks Calgary) The second thing I noticed was the food carts.  In a handful of strategic spots downtown, Portland has given an entire city block over to various food carts. I'm talking tacos, shawarma, donair, kebobs, fried chicken, ramen, paleo BBQ, sushi, Cajun cuisine, donuts...
